Beyond Convictions exists to create opportunities for people with convictions to build positive futures.
Led by lived experience, we understand the challenges that can come with having a conviction.
We provide practical, person-centred support across employment, housing, health and wellbeing, helping people overcome barriers, build stability and move forward with greater independence.
With around 12.5 million people in the UK estimated to have a conviction, these challenges affect a significant part of society, reinforcing the need for greater understanding and fairer opportunities.
We also work with organisations and services to challenge stigma, improve understanding and promote fairer practice.
At the heart of our work is a simple belief: a conviction can be part of someone’s story without defining their future.
Everything we do is guided by five values:
Adaptable — Flexible, practical and responsive to individual needs.
Exemplary — Professional, honest and committed to excellence.
Compassionate — Treating everyone with dignity, empathy and respect.
Accountable — Taking responsibility and delivering meaningful outcomes.
Empowering — Building confidence, unlocking potential and supporting independence.
When people are given a genuine second chance, everyone benefits.
With the right support and opportunities, people can rebuild their lives, fulfil their potential and contribute positively to their communities. Removing unnecessary barriers can also support rehabilitation, reduce reoffending and create stronger communities.
Lived Experience at the Heart of Our Work
Our understanding is shaped by firsthand experience of the justice system. It enables us to build authentic relationships, understand the realities people face and offer insight that goes beyond theory.
Practical, Person-Centred Support
We focus on the areas that can make the greatest difference, providing practical support shaped around each person’s circumstances, needs and goals.
Turning Experience into Positive Change
We combine lived experience with professional expertise and collaboration to influence policy, improve practice and develop solutions that create lasting change for individuals, organisations and communities.
David’s connection to the justice system began through lived experience, not a career.
After navigating the system himself, he experienced many of the challenges that can follow a conviction, including barriers to employment, housing, health and wellbeing.
Those experiences became the foundation for his work. David has since worked across the justice sector, combining firsthand understanding with professional expertise to support people rebuilding their lives and contribute to improving the systems and services around them.
Through Beyond Convictions, David is committed to challenging stigma, creating opportunities and ensuring people are recognised for who they are today, rather than defined by their past.
